Go too far
When she noticed this monstrosity in her city, she had to say something. McDonald’s staff only laughed when they complained about the man taking a nap in the cabin. She was angry.
She felt it was her right as a citizen to be able to enjoy her Big Mac without such inconvenience in the restaurant. But she would regret her complaints later.
From the rain in the eaves
Luann Cofield had lived in Fayetteville all her life, Georgie. Lately she had noticed what she saw as the city’s deterioration. Whenever she turned her head to look anywhere, she saw it. She had loved this city, but it didn’t look good.
She was hungry and decided to take a walk to get her lunch. But as she moved on the sidewalk, she saw that she had become increasingly angry. Maybe it was her looking for things, maybe it was just a bad day. Little did she know it would only go downhill from here.
Luann decided to go to her local McDonald’s for lunch. Maybe some food would make her feel better and her mood would improve. She decided to order a Big Mac meal that included soda and fries.
But when she raised the burger to her lips, she noticed something that made her angrily hit back her burger and see if she could speak to the manager.
When Luann first walked into the house, she had noticed what she thought were rags that were placed over the stand. That wasn’t enough to keep her from eating – she was hungry. But on closer inspection, she could see what it really was.
A man was lying on the cabin bench. Luann wanted to know who he was, he could have been a junkie or maybe a drunk. She wouldn’t be satisfied until she found out.
Call the manager
The cashier noticed that Luann stomped to the counter and held on: “I want to speak to the manager!” she demanded. He knew she wasn’t joking, so he immediately called the manager.
When the manager got there, Luann wasted no time and complained loudly about the man sleeping in the cabin. The manager looked at her for a moment and planned his next move. Then he said something that would escalate things.
The manager looked at the man who was napping in the restaurant and said, “Oh yeah, we know.” Luann couldn’t believe it. He didn’t take her complaints seriously and laughed right in her face.
She knew she had to do something about it. She pulled out her cell phone and decided to snap a picture that would get a lot more attention than she thought. It would soon lead to such controversy that her Facebook account would be deleted.
upload a photo
Without hesitation, Luann took the photo and posted it on her Facebook account. She would show the world what she had found in the restaurant and how she had been treated.
She then waited for the support of her Facebook friends. She knew at least her church would stand by her, didn’t she? She was absolutely wrong.
“Just one more reason for me to leave Fayetteville!” Luann has posted. “I went to McDonald’s in the middle of town and saw this guy sleeping in the cabin!”
“Her answer was, ‘Oh yeah, we know, hee hee. It’s okay.’ And I said, ‘Not really, but whatever. ‘“The comments came harsh and quick.
Luann’s post caught the attention of many people. She smiled, she knew she would get her support. But then something happened that she hadn’t expected – she was the one who was outraged.
Thousands of comments were a backlash against what Luann had done. They were angry at what they had done and they didn’t understand why. Who was this man whom everyone was defending?
The bigger picture
The commented people recognized the sleeping man as Simon Childs. He was 21 years old and had been very unlucky in the past few months.
Simon was a french fry cook for the same McDonald’s and that’s why he slept there. The staff didn’t mind because something terrible had happened to Simon that they resonated with.
It turns out that Simon got some sleep before starting his next shift. The new father moved extra shifts to earn the money he needed to support his four-month-old son.
Besides, Simon was homeless. He just couldn’t stretch his meager paycheck enough to put a roof over his head. Luann had shared a photo of Simon in its lowest form, and he was devastated to find out.
“It hurt to see my picture up there,” he said in an interview. With everything he dealt with – including his mother’s recent loss – the last thing Simon needed was a stranger to shame him online.
After the local news got the story, both Simon and Luann were brought into the spotlight. The poor man’s public humiliation was not over yet.
back to work
At this point, Luann had trapped so much heat online that she couldn’t take it anymore. She deleted her Facebook account and tried to put it out of her mind.
In the meantime, Simon continued to work. The morning after the mail went viral, he arrived at the restaurant to find an unexpected sight.
“I didn’t think the community would care enough about me to do that, but they do care,” said Simon tearfully as he piled piles of diapers, formula and other baby items on the restaurant floor.
Further support and offers of help came in. Then a couple of local chefs decided to step on the plate … and things just got covered in snow from there.
Theo and Xavier Thomas own the Fayetteville Restaurant Fusion Chefs Eatery. When they found out about Simon’s need, they knew they had to help in any way possible.
So they contacted him and explained that he had free access to her car so he could come for interviews. And they weren’t the only ones who gave Simon a leg up for a better life.
A barber soon stepped in and gave Simon a new haircut to improve his chances of getting a better job.
“Simon’s story touched our hearts,” said Xavier. This was all great news for Simon, who soon had some more lucrative job opportunities, but the struggling father still had no place to stay.
Roof over your head
Other locals donated for hotel stays so that Simon and his child have a safe place to sleep at night. Someone even went a step further and set up a GoFundMe account for them.
It didn’t take long for donations to arrive. Simon was really grateful for the opportunities he was given and even vowed to pass them on to help other people in his situation.
“I want to work for everything I get,” said the grateful young man. “I actually want to use everything I get from it and help other homeless people.”
But what about Luann, the disgruntled woman whose negative post sparked the whole chain of positive events in Simon’s life? How does Simon feel about her now?
Luann received aggressive backlash for her malicious Facebook post. Fortunately, the outcome of her actions led to some positive changes in Simon’s life, even though her initial intentions were mean.
But it would take more than just deleting her Facebook account to make amends for his humiliation. Finally, Luann agreed to meet Simon in person.
“I didn’t mean to hurt him,” she said in an interview in front of McDonald’s, where it all started.
When Luann found out about Simon’s situation, she felt terrible. When she saw him again, she hurried to hug him. “I’m sorry. Because that horrified me. It breaks my heart for you,” she said to him. But can Simon forgive her?
say thank you
“I’m not homeless, not now, thanks to Luann,” he said happily. “I don’t sleep in a McDonald’s anymore, so that’s good. I feel great.”
Then he turned to Luann and said: “I want to thank you. Not for the post itself, but to help me get my life going. “Has Luann learned her lesson?
When asked if she would do the same again if she were ever in a similar situation, she replied, “Absolutely not. And I would handle it differently. Maybe talk to someone and see how the situation is. “
Simon’s GoFundMe campaign raised a whopping $ 10,000 and is still going strong. But Simon has no intention of taking advantage of the generosity of the community …
“I actually want to use everything I get from it and help other homeless people,” he admitted during an interview with WSB-TV News. And just weeks after his story went viral, job vacancies began pouring in.
The last we heard was that Simon was getting a new job in construction. The latest update on Simon’s GoFundMe page said: “Simon is meeting his new work team! Dressed for comfortable travel when driving from the city to the construction site! Have a good trip and good luck in your new adventure! “But many internet users were still outraged.
Votes of rejection
“Luann Cofield was disgusted enough to expose Simon Childs on Facebook without his knowledge,” wrote one man, “… without bothering to ask McDonald’s staff why they allow him to sleep there.”
“Sad that African American men can’t even rest between shifts at their workplace at # McDonalds. If it were the other way around, people would be outraged.”
Apart from a few disgruntled users, the online response to Simon’s story has been largely positive. People all over the world congratulated him on his new job and new life.
“Great story about how when the intent to be ashamed happens the opposite and in a POSITIVE way!” A man wrote. Another woman added, “What she meant to bad, God meant to good. God bless you #SimonChilds and your baby! “
