Where your favorite foods come from: Part One

Do you know where the dumplings come from? What about cheeseburgers? Here are some of your favorite foods and where they come from, because who doesn’t want to talk about food?

Cheese burger

No one can explicitly agree which country the cheeseburger comes from in the United States, but we can agree that it comes from the United States. Three states claim that the cheeseburger came from them. According to California, Lionel Sternberger experimented with dropping a slice of cheese onto a beef patty in his father̵

7;s Pasadena sandwich shop in 1928, and so the cheeseburger was invented. According to Louisville, Kentucky, Kaelin’s restaurant was the place where the cheeseburger was invented in 1934. At the same time, Humpty Dumpty Drive-In in Denver, Colorado, also invented the cheeseburger in 1935 “A court order from 1944 and a brand to prove it.” No matter where it came from, we’re sure glad it’s here. It is definitely one of America’s most popular foods.


Goulash comes from Hungary and is actually a soup made from meat and vegetables, usually seasoned with peppers and other spices. Goulash is a typical Central European dish and one of the national dishes of Hungary and a symbol of the country. This meal comes from 9th century stews eaten by Hungarian shepherds. The meat was cooked, flavored and dried in the sun and then packed in bags from sheep’s stomachs. It was the first dinner in boxes, if you like, and all you had to do was add water to finish the meal. The first versions of goulash did not contain any paprika since it was only introduced in the 16th century. It depends on where you are, but American goulash is usually simple with crumbled beef, tomatoes, tomato soup / paste, elbow noodles, and some spices. There are so many varieties in Hungary, some omitting potatoes and adding sour cream and sauerkraut, others omitting pasta and adding vegetables, and some even replacing meat with beef bones and adding vegetables. Another recipe skips potatoes and caraway seeds and swaps them for kidney beans, or uses smoked beef or pork for the meat.

German chocolate cake

And finally a cake that has German in its name but doesn’t come from Germany. Yes, that’s right, German chocolate cake comes from the United States. It was originally called German Chocolate Cake and is traditionally a layered chocolate cake that is filled and topped with coconut pecan frosting. Chocolate maker Samuel German developed the formulation for dark baked chocolate in 1852, but the cake was not made until over 100 years later. “German’s Chocolate Cake” was the “Recipe of the Day” on June 3, 1957 in the Dallas Morning News. Mrs. George Clay submitted the recipe. The possessive form (German) was deleted in other publications, which led to the name “German Chocolate Cake” and also to the wrong identity and impression of a German heritage.


Fondue is a melted cheese dish that is served family-style over a portable stove or hotplate. They eat it with long-handled forks to pierce pieces of bread and then dip them in the cheese sauce. Fondue is commonly used to refer to a community pot of liquid in a fondue pot from chocolate to broth. The earliest fondue cheese recipe comes from Switzerland in a book from 1699 and demands that cheese be melted with wine and bread used for dipping. Not to be confused with “cheese fondue”, a dish made from eggs and cheese, something between scrambled eggs with cheese and cheese breath. Mix the cheese, wine and some spices, cut up some bread (or meat and vegetables) for dipping and you have it, fondue. Is this one of your favorite foods?
