Top 10 Mysterious Facts About Russia’s Secret Metro-2 Railway

The Metro-2 system is believed to be one of the most secret subway systems in the world. The line, which supposedly exists under the equally fascinating Moscow metro system, is said to have been used by the elites of the Soviet Union.

Some say it is still operational today. Rather than just being a metro system, some researchers suggest that there is an entire multi-story residence underneath Moscow, perhaps up to 15 levels deep. Could these claims be true?

10 A long history of secret underground projects

Long before the plans for the Moscow metro system were conceived, Russia had a long history of secret underground structures and locations. They go back centuries.

For example, in a secret chamber room there were hundreds of ancient texts under the Kremlin before they were mysteriously lost in the 16th century. Allegedly they were invaluable manuscripts from the Byzantine library. Whether they were destroyed or remain somewhere in a secret location is controversial.

Later in the 16th century, Ivan The Terrible oversaw his own underground network. He used it to imprison, torture, and even murder anyone who crossed it.

Perhaps the fate of those who worked on it is an even creepier detail of these underground torture networks. According to the reports, everyone involved in them was taken to the underground rooms and executed to protect these secrets.[1]

9 Materials from many historical buildings form the underground

Many of the raw materials that make up the apparent underground of Moscow and Metro-2 are said to have come from the stone and splendor of the buildings of the Russian royal family.

Although plans for an advanced underground system had existed for decades, work did not begin until the early 1930s. At Stalin’s specific orders, much of the materials came from centuries-old buildings that were completely demolished and stripped of anything that could be used.[2]

In part, this was undoubtedly related to the term “elite” and the return of wealth to the people – at least in theory when it was sold to the people. In reality, it was a matter of shedding the lowest hanging fruit. Perhaps this attitude shows clearly what underlies such an ideology.

8th Much was built by hand

Much of the work on the Moscow metro system was done by hand by citizens of the Soviet Union. Officially, this was due to a lack of suitable instruments and showed the commitment of the Soviet citizens.

However, many of the workers were political opponents. We should note that this is not an officially recognized fact. You will not find any written record of such forced labor. However, if we know what we are doing, how such political opponents have often been treated, it is likely that the rumors are at least partially credible.

Those who claim that the secret network exists under the official rail network say that only selected people were allowed to work on the unofficial routes. These people were certainly not the ones who may have had other ideologies than the officially recognized mindset.[3]

Regardless of who worked on which parts of the network systems, the work was tedious, groundbreaking and intense.

Despite all the official reasons for building the Moscow Metro, the reason for the Metro-2 system was most likely due to paranoia.

After the end of World War II there was a discreet hatred of Stalin for what he represented and those who ruled under him. In fact, this underlying hostility had been brewing among many in the Soviet people for years.

Stalin was really concerned about attempts in his life. Many claim that the Metro-2 system and the extensive underground living quarters associated with it were set up so that Stalin and all loyal comrades could escape if another revolution took place. Especially one that could pose an imminent threat to his life.[4]

So it would make sense if only a few were informed about the network, let alone entered it.

As was to be expected, only those with a top secret special permit could enter the Metro-2 system. That essentially meant the elite. Furthermore, these conditions still seem to exist today – at least unofficially.[5]

For various reasons, many researchers have applied for permission to enter the alleged tunnels. Almost all of them were rejected. Maybe that should say enough in itself. For example, why should a request for a network of tunnels that “do not exist” be rejected?

According to some sources, the Moscow Metro Union made discreet efforts in 2008 to recruit selected drivers for “secret routes”. Of course, these could have been legitimate government projects.

However, given the many rumors surrounding the mysterious Metro-2 network, it’s easy to see why researchers would make the connection. If the claims are true, what activity could take place under the city of Moscow today?

5 They only run short trains on very exclusive lines

While we should treat the reports with a pinch of salt (like any other involving Metro-2), the claims of exclusive lines and “short trains” are of particular interest. These may serve to maintain security and secrecy as much as possible – so much so that they usually only contain a single passenger car with space for a minimal number of people.

Researcher Yuri Zaitsev claims that four exclusive and secret lines still work today. These connect with important locations in Moscow, and each other can reach other important locations. (In the image above, the dotted lines supposedly reveal secret Metro-2 lines.)

These claims were apparently confirmed by former government minister Mikhail Poltoranin. He stated, “I know that Metro-2 has branches that lead to the suburbs so that the command can move away from the epicenter of a nuclear attack.” He also stated that the underground network was “huge” and could easily “hide a lot of people”.[6]

4th Many former politicians and defectors have spoken of the existence of the Metro-2

Since the fall of the Soviet Union – and in some cases earlier – many high-ranking politicians have come forward to confirm the existence of Metro-2. While it is easy to dismiss such statements as conspiracy nonsense, the many consistent claims here are of interest, at least to us.

For example, former Information Minister Alexander Muzykantskiy said that the gigantic network “is designed to ensure the stable operation of high-level military and political leadership in times of armed conflict, including a nuclear conflict”.[7]

Oleg Gordievsky, a defector from the Soviet Union, made even more alarming claims. He warned: “You do not yet know the main secret of the KGB: a huge underground city, a whole communication network of such facilities. But they won’t show you. Of course, they never will. “

Even now, many of these claims from the former Soviet Union are equally fascinating and frustrating because they appear to be steeped in disinformation.

3 They led to top secret underground bunkers

As we’ll discuss in a moment, there may be much more than just a rail network under and around the Metro-2 line. For example, it is believed that there are several underground bunkers. All of this in the name of fleeing nuclear annihilation.[8]

However, it appears that these bunkers weren’t just emergency rooms. Many researchers claim that they were equipped with the highest levels of luxury. In addition, they were designed for long stays of many months, maybe even years.

Whistleblowers and defectors claim that these bunkers are reserved exclusively for loyal, high-ranking members of the Communist Party and the Politburo. In addition, anyone could bring their entire family to luxurious underground homes.

A city under a city

Perhaps an even stranger and intriguing rumor surrounding the Metro-2 system is the alleged existence of a “city below the city” by Ramenki. It is apparently called Ramenki-43. This secret city was designed to house the Soviet elite in the event of a nuclear war or similar disaster.[9]

Various researchers and whistleblowers have made claims about the secret underground city. A former KGB officer even joined in time Magazine about it. He said the subway network could easily accommodate around 15,000 people. In addition, the city was on different levels and was connected to other secret places around Moscow.

By the way, the alleged underground city can also be reached from an abandoned property near Moscow State University. These alleged secret entrances are said to be scattered around Moscow.

1 Many “vacant lots” lead underground

Rumors and claims suggest that there are secret entrances to this underground network. You live in the seemingly “unfinished” buildings around the city of Moscow. Surprisingly, there are several such locations.

These vacant lots come in all shapes and forms – from unfinished hospitals to parking lots to unfinished buildings of all kinds. Urban legends surrounding Moscow state that all or some of these abandoned buildings provide access to this secret underground network.[10]

Interestingly, many of these purported secret entrances often attract unsavory elements of society – from drug gangs to satanic cults. These places also attract homeless people just looking for a safe place to sleep.

Whether any of these people ever wandered into these secret entrances remains a mystery. After walking around Moscow and these remote areas, you might be surprised at what you hear.
