Planning a holiday can be difficult, not least because the prices of flights are constantly changing. Everyone has another rule of thumb on how far he has to buy tickets, but it's definitely not science. If you're hoping to get away sometime in 2019, Kayak's experts have their backs.

Kayak's Travel Hacker Guide 2019 is an online cheat sheet that helps you figure out where to go next year's price, location and the type of vacation you're interested in. The most useful feature is the "Fly When" section, which presents the best national and international travel deals organized each month. In January, for example, there is still time to travel to Osaka (Japan) or Tampa (Florida), both of which are currently offering cheap flights. If you save your holidays, May is a better time to head to Hawaii or Reykjavik. If you can wait until September, Cozumel, Mexico, is the place to book a discount flight.

How far you want to book depends on the region you want to fly to. According to Kayak, if you fly from the US to anywhere in North America or the Caribbean, you should book one month in advance, while US residents flying to Europe, the Middle East, or Asia should book six months in advance. Flights from the US to Central America should ideally be booked three months before departure, while flights to the South Pacific should be booked four months in advance. Flights to Africa should be booked five months in advance.

Expedia has previously recommended booking flights at least 21

days in advance and ideally book the trip on a Sunday. Skyscanner reports that flights for the coming year are generally the cheapest for the first two weeks of January. So plan on. And if you later regret your purchase, be sure to read our guide on returning your money when changing flights.
