A lump in his stomach
The fear began to overwhelm Jake and he felt his stomach twist into a knot. He searched the stranger’s wallet and never thought he would find it. Perhaps stealing it was wrong, but he had gotten into tough times and had debts that he had to pay like everyone else, and we don’t even want to mention his mother’s hospital treatment. He had no choice but to turn to petty theft.
But he really regretted choosing this brand and taking his wallet. The only thing he could do now was give it up.
Jake Jones was trying to cope with the world of adulthood. He worked hard every day to pay for everything, rent, groceries, and even his mother’s expensive hospital bills.
But even long hours didn’t seem enough to get through. He had gotten into tough times and was trying to get out. Little did he know it was going to get worse.
It was a boring Monday morning like any other when Jake got unfortunate news. The job he worked at filed for bankruptcy. This left Jake’s future uncertain, he still had the same expenses as every other month, but now he wasn’t making any more money. He felt his chest tighten as fear overtook him. What would he do, he hadn’t saved any money in the bank and no more opportunity to earn.
There was only one option in Jake’s mind, he never thought he would turn to that. He knew this was crossing a line, but what choice did he have?
He finished his very last day at work and decided to console himself with dinner at a cafe he liked. It wouldn’t cost much since he had a voucher that he hadn’t used yet.
He got a burger and a beer. He didn’t want to think about his unpredictable future and instead turned to the television that the café had. What he saw on television left him in his footsteps.
The FBI search
There was an FBI warning on television and a wanted man who didn’t seem much older than Jake. He was wanted for possession of indecent pictures and was allegedly armed and dangerous. On TV, Jake saw that there was an FBI wanted for an elderly man who wanted indecent pictures in his possession. It was also stated that the man was armed and dangerous.
Jake soon looked away from the TV and forgot, he finished his meal and paid the bill. He got up and went home, but nothing could have prepared Jake for what happened next.
Cut through the park
Jake decided to drive through the park on the way home, it was getting late and fog had crept in and blocked the path just a few meters from him. As Jake moved on, he thought about his future. What would he do? He had no family to rely on, unfortunately there was no one for Jake to look out for.
Just as he sighed deeply, he noticed a man walking alone through the park. Suddenly a terrible feeling hit the pit of Jake’s stomach and he walked over to the man. He knew what to do. Just as he was overwhelmed by emotions, he saw someone walking alone. Jake felt something spin inside of him. He knew what he was going to do, desperate times, right?
Take his things
Jake took a deep breath and walked straight to the man. His gait slowly turned into a full sprint. He grabbed the lonely man and searched his pockets as fast as he could. It didn’t matter what he found, he was desperate.
When the man hit the ground, he was stirred up and tried to call for help. Jake caught a glimpse of his face in the streetlights above them. Jake suddenly felt bad in his stomach, was that him?
Was it him
Jake recognized the man’s face immediately, it couldn’t be him, could it? He looked like the face he’d seen on TV in the cafe – the man the FBI was looking for. Even so, he grabbed his cell phone and wallet and answered it.
Jake ran back to his apartment under cover of the fog. He still had the man’s affiliation in his hands. He was breathing as he locked his door, not knowing what he had just done.
He was ashamed
Jake went to his coffee table and sat down with the man’s things. Before going through his belongings, he let out a long sigh. He was ashamed, he never thought he would do that. There was really no other option.
Jake just hoped that whatever he found in that wallet would help him with his debt, at least for now. Jake didn’t realize the fact that this wallet was only going to cause trouble.
In the wallet
Jake turned the wallet upside down and shook all of the belongings on the coffee table. He looked down at the items on the wooden table and began looking through them. Small treasures such as banknotes and credit cards were found.
But then Jake saw something that wasn’t close to any “sweetheart”. He felt a lump in his throat that made it difficult to swallow. What had he just come up with?
Are you kidding?
“No way,” Jake muttered to himself. He felt his heart sink like he was on a 200 foot roller coaster and his palms began to sweat. Are you kidding?
Why did the man have this in his wallet? He felt sick. He had no other choice. He had to go straight to the police station.
Run to the station
Jake left his apartment and ran to the police station. He had no idea what he was going to say and or how he would explain how he found that wallet, but surely the cops would understand if they looked inside? They had to.
It was their responsibility to keep people safe.
Give the cops the wallet
After Jake gave his testimony to the cops, he felt the weight of the world lift off his shoulders. But when he handed the wallet to the cops, Jake knew he was surrendering his freedom; his life for the next few years. But Jake didn’t care. He had to make sure the police saw what was in the wallet.
And just like Jake, the cops were speechless when they looked in the wallet.
The truth is out
Inside was an ID showing that the man Jake attacked had a mild form of autism called Asperger’s. Jake felt guilty the moment he saw this card.
How could he do this to someone who was so vulnerable? He felt his eyes were full of tears. He knew he had to do the right thing.
Guilty and charged
Jake admitted to attacking this man because shame and guilt were too much for him. He knew he had to pay for his crime. It wasn’t that he did such a thing, but times were tough.
A few weeks passed and Jake was sentenced to two years in prison. Even so, the judge applauded Jake’s honesty and admitted it was him.
