Nestled in the Adirondack Mountains of the state, this city offers sugar maple, American beech and yellow birch trees. The best time to travel: the second weekend of October during the two-day Flaming Leaves Festival. More than 100 tree species (including scarlet, maple, and hickory) make this location on the North Carolina border the most visited national park in America. After completing the 11-mile loop from Cades Cove, head to the popular tourist town of Gatlinburg, full of breweries, wineries and even moonshine distilleries.

The city is literally named for its abundance of aspen trees that turn golden yellow in mid-September. For a breathtaking view, take a shuttle bus to Maroon Bells, the two most photographed peaks in the Elk Mountains.
