His whole body begged him to either roll out of the car or take control of the steering wheel. Where did they go He had a very bad feeling about it.
Then the car suddenly stopped, his friend said quietly “out” without even looking at him. Something was wrong, where were they anyway? What was his friend planning and had he stumbled upon his secret?
For ever friends?
Mike and Jim were inseparable, best friends for life and had been since they were both eight years old. They’d both been through everything together – tragedy, loss, and heartbreak.
If Mike could be sure of one thing, it was that his Jim had his back through it all. Mike knew he could count on him and trust him. It would prove wrong.
The cold shoulder
It was Mike’s birthday weekend and he was looking forward to handing out the gift card he’d been given the previous weekend. It was the perfect day to go out and pamper yourself a little. It was his birthday after all.
Mike searched all over the store in the mall for the items he could now afford. What would he buy? He really didn’t know. Suddenly Mike noticed Jim in the busy crowd of shopping malls. He went straight to his friend to give him a hug, but Jim just shrugged. What was his problem?
Jim had Mike’s trust in everything, but Mike hadn’t been honest with him about one thing … He had withheld something from him for over two months and wished he could tell him. He just didn’t think Jim would understand.
Jim gave him a stern look and turned to hurry out the shop door. Maybe he knew his secret? Mike felt a feeling in the pit of his stomach.
Mike had always liked Jim’s sister, she was beautiful and it turned out she found him attractive too. So the two had been secretly together for two months without Jim knowing. They felt if he ever found out he was going to be angry.
They had planned meticulously. They always hung around where they knew they wouldn’t meet Jim. Mike was confident that Jim wasn’t the wiser. But what if he wasn’t?
Mike was sitting in a cafe trying to understand why Jim had wiped him off. He felt about his secret and it gnawed at his conscience. He needed to find out if Jim had any inkling of the secret romance or if he was upset for some other reason.
Jim was his best friend and he didn’t want it to end in any way. But he really liked her, what could he do? Mike was waiting in the cafe for Jim, whom he had invited there so they could talk.
Mike was actually surprised when Jim replied to his text and simply said, “On my way.” He usually used emojis or gifs when they texted each other. Mike knew this was serious.
Mike sat stationary while he drummed on his lap. He was so nervous that he almost bumped into the table and spilled his coffee all over the place. He noticed that his hands were shaking and that the drumming on his lap didn’t help.
He waited and waited, but after 45 minutes he realized that Jim would not be arriving. He could have simply turned down his invitation, but that was cruel. Does he deserve this treatment? Maybe it made Jim feel better when he got him up.
He dialed Jim, but it went straight to voicemail. Jim gave him the silent treatment and he knew it. After a while he got a message saying it was Jim. But what it said made Mike scratch his head.
The text read: “Change of plan. I’ll pick you up and we can go somewhere else. “Mike was now more confused than ever with his friend’s behavior.
As his eyes kept reading the text, he wondered why it was necessary to go elsewhere. Maybe he didn’t want to make a scene in public? Mike replied, “Sure.” Fortunately, the text couldn’t convey the nervousness.
Mike was sitting on the sidewalk outside the cafe. He was preparing for the black eye he would receive. What he didn’t know, however, was that it would be much worse than any black eye.
His heart raced when he saw Jim’s car come around the corner. He was ready for anything Jim had in store for hello. The car stopped in front of Mike and he heard his friend’s annoyed voice say, “Get in.”
Mike obediently obeyed his friend and got into the car. Jim He wasn’t greeted with a hello or a handshake. Although they both sat down, Mike couldn’t help but notice how much bigger Jim was than he would ever be.
“Where are we going?” Mike asked nervously. “You’ll see,” muttered Jim, not even looking at Mike. He could see the white of Jim’s ankles as he clutched the steering wheel tightly. They were driving on the freeway and Mike suddenly noticed something.
Mike shifted nervously in his seat as Jim bombed the freeway. The sign on the edge of town flew past them. Where did he take him?
An hour passed and you could relieve the tension in the car with a knife. The sound of traffic faded as they drove down the winding, deserted streets. Mike panicked. “Just wait,” insisted Jim.
Mike couldn’t take it any longer. Things were clearly not all right between them, so he might as well get it all out frankly, he thought.
Just as Mike was about to tell Jim to stop, the car stopped screeching. Jim turned to Mike, his eyes bloodshot. “Get out of the car,” he muttered.
“Just go outside,” said Jim in an intimidating voice. Mike knew that his “friend” wasn’t playing around. Mike did as he was told and reluctantly got out of the car. His heartbeat pounded in his throat.
Mike had to make a decision. Instinct told him to run, but his legs had turned to jelly. Jim made his way to the passenger side when an uncomfortable feeling crept up Mike’s spine.
Alone in the dark
“Jim, what’s wrong?” Mike begged. Jim quickly turned Mike around and blindfolded his eyes before pushing him away from the car.
At this point, Mike saw no point in fighting. Jim was much stronger than him. He led Mike deep into the woods. The sun went down. Even though Mike knew his best friend was right behind him, he had never felt more lonely.
Deep in the forest
As Jim pushed him further into the dark forest, Mike could hear the birds chirping as they slowly fell silent.
Suddenly Jim stopped dead. “Jim?” Called Mike. But there was nothing but the sound of the wind in the trees. Mike was sweating buckets when he realized that he was now standing alone in the middle of a dark forest. “Jim!”
When Mike stood blindfolded, the tension killed him. Did he deserve a punch in the mouth for sleeping with Jim’s sister? Maybe.
But guess what, thought Mike. We are both grown up and I don’t need permission from anyone’s brother to go out with them. It was then that Mike felt the blindfold lash from his face. And when he closed his eyes to what was staring at him, his newfound confidence suddenly took a nosedive.
Everything is revealed
“Surprise!” Jim yelled along with about a hundred of his close friends and family. As Mike’s eyes adjusted to the light, he was overwhelmed with relief.
Mike didn’t say a word as he scanned the scene of people standing between decorated tables, ready to celebrate his birthday belatedly. Then his eyes fell on Jim.
“Happy Birthday Mike!” Exclaimed Jim. Mike was stunned. At that moment he had so much going through his head that he couldn’t understand what he was saying.
“Why didn’t you just tell me we were going hunting or something?” Mike finally gathered. “Well,” began Jim, handing Mike a beer. “I thought if you think I knew something about you and Ronnie, there was no way you would suspect the party.” Beer spurted from Mike’s nose at the shock of Jim’s recent reveal.
Guest of honor
“You know me and Ronnie ?!” Mike asked, preparing for the slap in the face he’d been avoiding all afternoon.
“Of course,” answered Jim. “I’m not an idiot. But it’s you if you don’t go over and say hello. “Jim disappeared into the crowd and revealed Ronnie, who was standing in the clearing in a stunning summer dress. What are friends for?
