We are rapidly approaching one of the most terrible events humanity has ever encountered. No, no global warming, but full-blown nostalgia for the 90s – the cargo pants of the decades. Soon we drown in spaghetti straps and Virtual Boy memes as our thoughts slowly stop listening to Blind Melon. And the avant-garde leads Marvel's Captain Marvel who has just started a very retro website. But children from the 90s will remember that this is not the real deal.
The Trailer for Captain Marvel which was discontinued in 1995, already felt intentionally (in more ways than one) with its blockbusters and Top Gun references. However, Marvel does seem to double in number, and there is nothing more than 90s than an old-looking comic sans site. The entire site is dressed up in the '90s, with a strikingly loud color scheme, page counter, scrapbook, and the ubiquitous "multimedia" page with thumbnails that are so small that you need to start Windows 95 low enough to see properly.
All these little lies could be forgiven if there was not one single massive oversight: the multimedia. In particular, you can access the multimedia. There is no QuickTime error, no pointless download of .wav files. It did not even say that you should update our RealPlayer before you show us the full trailer. That's a bit of whaling on the moon nonsense.
How can you possibly recreate what it was like to be online in the mid-'90s when you just click on a thumbnail and a movie is playing? People would swing you into the marketplace and burn you as a witch if you showed them then. And knowing that they were not ready to ruin their entire marketing stunt for the sake of authenticity, we'll have to wonder if Disney is nothing more than a bunch of corporate sales.
For Cedric, there are not enough friends to have a myspace page, so you just post it on Twitter .
