If you think Swedish cuisine is limited to meatballs and herring, you’ve never celebrated Fredagsmys– the Swedish version of Taco Tuesday. The day, which is reflected in “leisurely Fridays”, is an opportunity for Sweden to meet their loved ones at the end of a long week and eat home cooking. And instead of indulging in traditional Swedish cuisine, the Fredagsmys cuisine is the Tex-Mex choice.

Fredagsmys takes the already Americanized taco and gives it a Swedish twist. At Taco Fredag ​​(Taco Friday), ingredients such as tortillas, minced meat, peppers and tomatoes are laid out in the Smörgåsbord style. The spread may also contain some toppings that are rarely served with tacos outside of Scandinavia, such as yogurt, cucumber, peanuts, and pineapple. Tacos may be the food most closely associated with Fredagsmys today, but any quick junk food is suitable for the occasion. Burgers and pizza are just as popular as sweets, fries and popcorn. Eating only makes up part of the night: settling down on the couch in your pajamas to watch TV with loved ones is just as important as eating.

In Sweden, where the weather is rough and daylight is scarce for much of the year, it is necessary to take the time to comfort indoor activities. The Danes do something similar with Hygge, although tacos are not an explicit part of this tradition.
