Surreal, frightening Garfield comics are suddenly everywhere

This is from Will Burke, an Instagram artist whose art style is probably best described, as if the horror manga Junji Ito were locked in a room with nothing but a pile of weekly newspaper comics and his own screams. Burke draws nightmare versions of classic characters from the Muppets to SpongeBob, but his best-known work is probably his Garfield series. And for a good reason.

But this obsession of turning Fat Favorite Cat (or more accurately, nobody's) into John Carpenter's The Thing is not just a matter of the meme of the week. It's a rich, stupid carpet over a decade in the making.

As early as 2004 a popular artist in the Something Awful Forums under the pseudonym "Shmorky" was busy publishing edited parodies of popular strips. how Nancy Archie and Garfield incorporated the sadistic themes into the usually G-Rated cartoons. He also invented "Zalgo," an interdimensional, lovecraftian nightmare meme that naturally fits into a variety of children's comics.
