NASA scientist simulates sunsets on other planets



Earth, Venus and Mars all have the same sun, but due to factors such as distance and atmospheric composition, it looks different from each planet. This is especially true during sunset when sunlight shines more through a planet’s atmosphere. Now you no longer have to imagine what an alien sunset would look like: The following video, created by a NASA scientist, shows realistic simulations of different sunsets throughout the solar system.

Planetary scientist Geronimo Villanueva from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, came up with the idea while working on a computer modeling tool for potential Uranus missions. The model helps scientists study how sunlight interacts with the atmosphere of other planets. This data can tell us a lot about the chemical makeup of a planet, and how Villanueva found out when testing the tool, it can also show us what an beyond sunset looks like.

After modeling a Uranian sunset, Villanueva created simulations for sky colors on Earth, Venus, Mars, and Saturn̵

7;s moon Titan. In the following clip you can see the celestial domes of the eight celestial bodies as well as a blurry version of the earth. As the sun moves from horizon to horizon, the colors of each circle begin to change. On Mars, for example, the sky changes from brown to gray-blue because the fine Martian dust particles in the atmosphere effectively scatter the blue light of the sun when it is deep in the sky.
