At the same time the exhibition pays homage to Derneburg Castle (19459007), a long church history. Once a fortified dwelling, the monastery served as the home of various religious orders, from Augustinian Cistercian nuns to the establishment of a Lutheran establishment for "young women" to secularization. Since the beginning of the 19th century, it was owned by the Münster family, who used it as a showcase for their extensive collection of art and artefacts. It was acquired in 1974 by George and Elke Baselitz, who made the monastery their home and studio for the next thirty years. In 2006, it was sold to the halls and merged with the adjacent domain, both of which underwent extensive refurbishment to become a public museum area for the Hall Art Foundation.
