On the pavement
Jeff Longo thought it was going to be a day like any other while walking home when he noticed something on the sidewalk. What he found kept him from staying dead.
There was a small creature on the hot sidewalk just in front of Jeff. It didn’t look like anyone in his family was there to help. It wouldn’t be long in the Florida sun.
New best friend
Longo knew he had to do something. The little creature wouldn’t stand a chance on its own, so Longo had the feeling that he would be the one to help her. He picked up the little animal and hurried home. What would have ended for this animal turned out to be a beautiful story and gave Jeff Longo a new best friend.
Back to the important question … what could this creature be?
Not on his watch
The creature was blind, hairless, and had small razor-sharp claws. Nobody would have thought this thing was cute, but Jeff Longo didn’t care when he came across it on the hot sidewalk in Tampa, Florida.
Longo assumed that his family had just left it there to bake in the sun. He didn’t know what this little animal was, but he wouldn’t let anything happen to any animal while he was around. Nothing deserves to die in the hot sun.
Could be anything
Longo could have assumed it was a tiny animal like a rat. It was no bigger than his little finger. But nature is weird sometimes and when you assume that you will get stuck.
An example is a baby kangaroo who is as small as a grain of rice when it is born. That way, they can comfortably fit in their mother’s pouch, where they can grow safely. With that in mind – it could be any type of animal.
Since it was so small, Jeff Longo had no idea what that animal might be. So Longo searched the internet for answers. Once on Reddit, his questions were answered by many heartless people who said the animal was going to die and its efforts would be in vain.
Longo didn’t let that discourage him. He knew it was fate that he found the animal when he did. He felt that all this animal needed was love and care, and soon after – it would be healthy and safe.
Bring it back to health
Still not knowing what the animal was, he researched the information necessary to properly feed this animal. He had to be careful not to eat the wrong diet or it would suffer.
He fed the animal from a bottle in which he mixed puppy formula and cream. As he continued, the animal began to grow fur and whiskers. Each day he continued to feed it, it grew bigger until his eyes opened. Once his eyes were open it was much more adorable. It was starting to look like a rodent. But Jeff felt that something was wrong.
After three months, Longo did everything in his power to rehabilitate this animal. After being around for so long, he decided to name this weird animal biscuit.
As she grew, her ears fluttered and her fur became even thicker. She looked more like a gerbil now than the alien she was three months ago. But Jeff still couldn’t really tell what she was. Maybe she was a hamster? A prairie dog? A guinea pig? Nobody knew.
Not a rat
What kind of animal was biscuit? She got gray fur from nose to tail. Only a few months earlier she was far removed from her strange form.
After her tail developed into a wide furry limb, Jeff knew she wasn’t a rat. Her belly was covered in white fur that looked like the best place for a stomach massage. And who knows? Maybe she would love them.
It was a difficult task to raise and nurture an unknown species. But Jeff had stamina that little others had. And thanks to that, Biscuit thrived under his care. She was no longer struggling to survive.
Somehow the dogs Jeff owned understood what he was doing and befriended Biscuit. Biscuit soon became a member of the Longo household, and even the dogs enjoyed having her with them. Jeff told reporters for the Daily Mail, “I just have to watch them so they don’t accidentally crush them.”
Jeff would never leave Biscuit alone, he even took her to his job. You must have been okay with furry creatures. Biscuit went into Jeff’s pocket when he went to work every day.
As she was growing up, the people Jeff showed her said she looked like a tree squirrel. But Jeff felt that she was somehow different from a squirrel. It was a feeling he had.
A few clues helped Longo identify his new friend. The small biscuit seemed to have a little more skin around the armpit, her tail was quite flat and bushy, and her large eyes were designed so that she could see in the dark.
With a little research, Longo discovered that his new furry friend was a southern flying squirrel, a nocturnal creature that can glide more than 150 feet.
It’s a bird, it’s an airplane, no … it’s a flying squirrel!
Once he did enough research to piece the puzzle together, he was even better able to provide Biscuit with the necessary nutrition and living environment.
He found that she really enjoyed fruits, nuts, and seeds. When Longo discovered the true nature of Biscuit, he worked hard to create a suitable environment for her. For example, he added a bag in biscuits cage because flying squirrels like to put their homes in small places like woodpecker holes and nesting boxes.
Spread those wings
Whenever he is around, Longo lets cookies out of her cage and lets her explore the house. He told the Daily Mail that he had covered most of his furniture with fabric so the squirrel could grab and crawl around.
Longo set up a Go Fund Me account a while ago to raise funds for a new biscuit enclosure so she could have more space to spread those wings! She loves her new home! The next question was whether to keep them as a domesticated pet or to release them back into the wild.
This is a difficult question for many reasons. While some people believe biscuit should be released into the wild, it is more than likely that it would not survive.
Since she was hand raised by Longo at such a young and impressive age and got used to his dogs, she is not afraid of people or dogs who could persuade her to have a fatal encounter. Which means only one thing …
Happy where she is
Longo will still have to take care of her. You are a family!
Fortunately, it looks like Biscuit is very happy where she is. Keks probably escaped death the day Longo found her and instead made a new father and best friend.
She was even seen trying her skills on this tiny skateboard.
Thank you Longo for taking the risk for this tiny creature and thank you, Biscuits, for being a fighter and having the stamina to live against all odds. Oh, and thank you both for warming our hearts with your story.
