Man complains about fence, legal solution makes his life worse

See with your own eyes

She wanted to sit outside that evening. She had a neighbor from Hell who had always tried to make her life difficult, so she wanted to see the look on his face after she returned to him.

The terrible neighbor creaked from his property on time. He was mad at her for what she’d done. The syllables weren’t clear when the man screamed incoherently. She just smiled back.

Helen Reddington felt that she had finally got what she had longed for in life. She and Glenn, her husband, had finally got the property they̵

7;d dreamed of on the Florida coast. They were now ready to spend the rest of their years in this lovely home.

They were ready to fix the old house, they saw it as a fun project – really make the house their own. After a year of hard work, they looked at what they’d done. But the moment wasn’t what they expected.

Ruined moment

“What do you do?” yelled her neighbor Jim Burtt. He lived next door and ran an old motel that was more like a dump. “We’re just marveling at our finished home, Mr. Burtt,” Helen said to him as he peered over the fence and stared into her property.

“Well, you still haven’t cleared that rubbish away,” he croaked as he glanced at a small piece of rubble that the couple would throw away the next morning. “And I’ll do you another little favor.” he worked out.

Asking favors

TripAdvisor

Though their neighbor was so often a thorn in their side, he didn’t mind asking for a favor often enough. The same neighbors he’d mistreated and who were now rude owed him a favor in his eyes.

The man would share irrelevant gossip he’d heard about, who knows where, thinking it was a sensible deal for an unreasonable favor. The couple could be less concerned with what the motel people were up to, and frankly it had nothing to do with them.

Go a step too far

What the motel manager was asking for this time was completely unreasonable. He wanted the couple to allow their guests to be on their property so they could use their hose after they went swimming.

Helen didn’t like that, but she didn’t want a fight either. To keep things amicable between the residents, she agreed to have them come and do the dishes on their property. She thought it would add another five minutes to the peace – but it didn’t turn out that way.

Panels

DIY

After a couple of weeks, Helen put down some panels to reinforce her fence and give the motel guests more privacy when they wanted to do the dishes. How could that be unreasonable?

After spending a full afternoon repairing the fence, she felt a little at ease with a stronger barricade between herself and the motel. But while she was at work one day, her phone kept ringing.

Without permission

The motel manager ordered Helen to pull down the fence. He said that she had set it up without asking him first, apparently she needed his permission. It didn’t even seem important to him that his guests benefit.

Helen didn’t understand why he was so angry. Then she thought about it and happily took the panels down. If he did all of her work for nothing, she wouldn’t just stop there.

Get to work

When she began to go back to work just to please her neighbor, she looked over to see where some extra supplies were. She had other plans too, it wasn’t going to stop taking the panels off. This would stop the feud for good.

He couldn’t even see the panels from his side of the fence, so there was no need to take them off. However, they allowed her to do a few additional things that her neighbor could not see until after they had already done so.

Hot tea

After her hard work, she sat on her porch with a cup of tea and just waited. She was excited to see what the motel manager would do when he came out and saw her hard work. In the meantime, she continued to sip.

All of the unsolicited phone calls made her feel like she had to stop this. She couldn’t wait to see his reaction as he shuffled outside.

“Renovations”

Helen posted the whole thing on a popular Reddit thread called “Malicious Compliance”. Many Reddit users enjoyed seeing the man get what he deserved.

First she took off the boards the neighbor had called. But she saw this as an opportunity and had to work on something “extra”. It’s always good to renovate, isn’t it?

Malicious Compliance

BBC

After removing the fence panels, Helen installed a neat little wrought iron gate in the alley. She knew full well that she was about to wreak havoc.

She grinned to herself as she stepped back and admired her handicraft. But how could her neighbor have a problem with this new addition? After all, it was her property … right?

Move on

BBC

The new gate was just outside the little alley where Mr. Burtt’s guests had showered. Helen smiled as she closed it tightly.

And considering how petty the neighbor had been, Helen didn’t stop there. She wanted to make it as difficult for the motel owner as he had made her life.

Parking problems

Helen even went a step further to make the division between properties as clear as possible.

She installed another chain in front of the parking lot that motel guests had used and which was also on Helen’s property. But that wasn’t the only privilege she wanted to take away from the rude motel owner that day.

Access denied

The new chain also blocked Mr. Burtt from Helen’s trash cans. That shouldn’t be a problem, should it? Not correct.

Mr. Burtt had become complacent over the years at being able to fill Helen’s trash can with the excess rubbish from his motel when his cans began to overflow. Well, Helen would put an end to that too.

support

Reddit

When Reddit users read Helen’s blow-by-blow report about the length of time she went to show her ungrateful neighbor how much he’d taken advantage of, they clapped back and even added their own tales of revenge in the comments section.

But there was one question on everyone’s lips. How did Mr. Burtt react to Helen’s new “renovations”?

Go viral

BBC

After Helen’s post was positively rated 7,000 times and filled with comments on Reddit, she released an update.

“I didn’t expect it to explode like this, but thank you! This only happened recently so I’m not sure if or when there will be any new information, but I will update you guys when I hear anything. “

advice

Redditors also had some advice for Helen. They didn’t think she’d done enough to show her ungrateful and demanding neighbor who the boss was.

“At this point, you are forwarding his calls to the local building inspectors’ office,” wrote one user, “… and doing a site survey to see how much of his property is really yours.”

Protect your property

“That would be my first action,” wrote another user. “Hire an inspector, take back every inch that is mine, all active favors will stop immediately, and I would probably block the phone number immediately too. Do you have a problem? Send a letter. Emergency? Call 9-1-1. “

“… oh yes, and security cameras around the property so you have evidence of when (or when) he / his guests enter the house.” Helen replied, “Should mention that earlier, but we actually got cameras and they are now being installed every day.” But not everyone was happy with the end of Helen’s story.

expectations

Credits

Many Reddit users expected Helen to truly live up to the title of the thread “Malicious Compliance”. “Here I thought she would strip naked in the outdoor shower every time she was in the alley,” wrote one Redditor.

“I’ve been waiting for this too,” commented another, “the malicious compliance was pretty good, but it felt anti-climactic because we were hoping for more, I think.” The internet has ruined us friends. “

Change of mood

After that, Mr. Burtt kept himself to himself and never asked for another favor. He was forced to pay for a different water plan so that his guests could take a long shower outside on his own property – and had to fetch additional bins.

Has Helen gone too far? Or is that exactly what it takes to stop a disruptive neighbor like this for good?
