Difference between modern and contemporary art

It is tempting to use the dictionary to differentiate between modern and contemporary art. The terms "modern" and "contemporary" are defined in a very similar way to everything that relates to or is related to the present. When it comes to art, however, these two words are hardly congruent.

Modern Art

The movement for modern art originated in the 1860s, which was set back by the culmination of the industrial revolution. This was a time when photography became so popular that the concept of art as a reflection of reality was almost completely eliminated. Instead, artists boldly experimented with colors, shapes, media and techniques, as well as modern art, leading to the emergence of several new trends and movements, such as abstract expressionism, futurism, pop art, and more.

One of the greatest names in modern art is Al Held, who specializes in abstract expressionism, but particularly likes to work with geometric shapes, illusions and layers, as manifested in his work Stoneridge. Another influential force in modern art is Roy Lichtenstein, who became famous as a passionate leader of the pop art movement. Lichtenstein liked to interpret comic images in huge shapes and vibrant colors, but in the early 1

970s he ventured to more abstract works, such as one of his most famous works, Mirror # 5.

Contemporary Art

Contemporary art is generally considered to be any Described art that is produced by living artists and that alludes to works of expression after the Second World War. Unlike modern art, contemporary art has started to use new media in line with resource and technology developments such as video art, installation art, and the like, but focuses primarily on social, financial, and political issues.

Lisa Adams is one of the best-known names in contemporary art and works mainly with paintings and gouaches that represent nature, especially with the use of wood as a medium. Ellina Kevorkian is another significant name in the era of contemporary art. Kevorkian is an artist who combines painting, video, photography and performance through humor, metaphors and visual art and pop culture.

The difference

The boundary between modern and contemporary art is not immediately palpable, but close to each other there are certain differences between the two. In several ways, modern art has set the stage for contemporary art, both of which appear to be a direct result of technological developments and are meant to represent social issues or popular cultures that were relevant at the time art was created.

When distinguishing between modern and contemporary art, it is important to mention the French painter Gustave Courbet, who led the realistic movement in the 1900s. Courbet firmly believed that painting should only reach as far as the eye could see, and defied the then prevailing concept of romanticism. His influence was massive enough to produce several groups of artists such as the Cubists and the Impressionists, all of whom followed in his footsteps as independent thinkers. This paved the way for the birth of two important epochs in the world of art.
