Best True Crime Streaming Documentaries

It is always disappointing to find that critics consider one of your favorite films a complete gap from start to finish – and it is just as strange to hear how industry experts fall upon a film that you thought was the world's slumberfest for the century.

With the advent of online rating aggregators that include reviews from both professionals and the public, it is all too easy to see how large these discrepancies can be. To find out which films are the most controversial, RAVE Reviews has compiled Rotten Tomatoes' "Top 100" lists from 17 different genres into a huge collection of 967 films and then sorted them in the order in which the difference between the critique score and the score was great for the audience.

The top spot went to Knock Down the House a 201

9 Netflix documentary about four working class women running for Congress, including New York's Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. For critics, it was a flawless work of visual journalism that deserves a rare 100 percent rating from Rotten Tomatoes. The audience disagreed with these critics with 82 percent and rated them miserable 18 percent.

The story is similar for 17 of the 20 films on the list: critics gave them a gold star while the audience was unimpressed. The Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), staged by Rian Johnson, for example, was rated by critics at 91 percent, but in the eyes of most cinema-goers it obviously couldn't do justice to the legacy of George Lucas – the number of viewers is high only 43 percent.

However, there are some crowd pullers that critics have not accepted. The father-son duo Donald and Kiefer Sutherland teamed up for the Western Forsaken 2016, which entertained the audience enough to receive an 87 percent rating. Professional reviewers found it unimaginative and unforgettable and gave it a below-average grade of 42 percent.

When all of this data is taken into account, critical appreciation definitely does not guarantee that you will enjoy a movie – and the choice of guilty pleasure towards Citizen Kane (1941) is fully justified.
