The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is by far the most famous and revered landmark in Kandy. This temple is located in the center of the city and, as the name suggests, houses a sacred tooth relic of the Gautam Buddha. The temple itself was built during the reign of Sri Sri Vira Narendra Sinha, who is also recognized as the last Sinhalese king of Sri Lanka. The iconic octagonal part of the temple – called “Paththirippuwa” – was added next to a moat by King Sri Vickrama Rajsinghe – the last king of Sri Lanka before the British conquered and conquered the British.
