62% of Britons think that if you are called “Karen” you are gross

The internet is a strange place. If you’ve spent time online for the past several years, you likely have a vague understanding of “memes” and the culture that goes with them. These jokes are often very adaptable – and they also have a strange habit of making their way into everyday life.

One such meme, used to identify a certain “type” of a middle-aged woman, appears to have negatively affected the perception of a relatively common name. We’re talking about ‘Karen’, of course, and all of the weird negativity that seems to come with the name.

Whether you are just using the internet to play at Casino Winner online casino, to browse social media, or to create your own memes, you may have encountered this trend. So what is it about?

Are all ‘Karens’ disgusting?

Probably not! However, a UK study appears to show that traits and behaviors now associated with the name may change the perception of people with that nickname. According to a PlayOJO poll, 62% of Britons believe that all Karens are inherently disgusting.

Where does it come from? On the Internet, the word “Karen” describes a rude woman who is usually over 40 years old and is usually white. It comes from an idea or stereotype from people who are likely to ask to speak to the manager. Over the years the ‘Karen meme’ has made fun of the claim.

For many people, sharing “Karen” stories has been immensely cathartic. Nobody likes injustice and righteous attitudes. However, the meme seems to have evolved beyond recognition, affecting how many people across the board see others known as “Karen”.

Is that a worrying trend?

Those defending the Karen meme will say that it is purely a stereotype. It started as a satirical way of defending oneself against legitimate behavior. As recent statistics show, this may have an impact on completely innocent Karens!

There are some schools of thought on the subject. Some believe that your name should not define you and that ‘Karen’ identifies an ugly attitude.

However, others believe that it is a harmful stereotype that really affects innocent people. Since the “Can I speak to your manager?” First surfaced in the early 2010s, claims of unwarranted negativity towards someone named Karen have grown in number.

What can ‘Karens’ do?

As with all memes, this trend will likely go away after a while. Well-adjusted, friendly women named Karen shouldn’t be too worried, however.

Provided you continue to be kind and responsible to others, there are no reasons why you should face persecution. In the Internet age, it’s strange to see stereotypes of this kind become so commonplace.

Satire and humor should never be censored. However, the next time you meet someone named Karen, don’t just assume they are going to cause unnecessary fuss!
