One of the best ways to shop and experience local culture in Sri Lanka is to explore some of the island’s major markets. Many of these are located in the commercial capital of Colombo, including the famous Pettah Market, which is a busy area with all kinds of shops and stalls that offer great bargains. The Good Market near Colombo Racecourse, which focuses on organic and local products, is also worth a visit, as is the Kala Pola Art Market next to Viharamahadevi Park. This unique roadside market is located near the rare Bar + Kitchen and offers various paintings by local artists for sale. Once you’re done, you’re sure to have an appetite and easily find a restaurant in Colombo that caters to all your culinary needs! If you move away from the city you will find two other well-known markets. On the west coast there is the Negombo fish market and on the south coast the bile fish market, each of which offers fascinating insights into the livelihood of local fishermen.
