The scariest month of the year is here and with it a calendar full of unusual holidays. Between your autumn walks, horror movie marathons, and National Cat Day on October 29 (which is basically the most important holiday of the year here at Mental Floss), check out some of these funky celebrations.
. 1 October 1: World Vegetarian Day
It's easy enough to eat meatless for a day, but this celebration is designed to initiate a month of vegetarian awareness and encourage more sustainable changes.
. 2 October 2: World Day of Farm Animals
This seems to be at odds with World Vegetarian Day, until you feel that this is actually a day off against the farm in farm animal and the to protest cruel conditions that it implies. It is an admirable effort, but the founders of the World Animal Day were somewhat disregarded in their decision to celebrate this on Gandhi's birthday.
. 3 2nd October: Recognition ceremony for the National Penitentiary
Because actually we should celebrate it every day.
. 4 October 4: Ten-Four-Days
The fourth day in the tenth month of the year is the day the world celebrates radio operators to whom we say "Ten-Four".

Someone spent time to realize this art. So take some time to appreciate them.

If the calendar states that you must do it, you must do it .

These eel-shaped, slime-producing fish are pretty disgusting (seriously), but they're also awesome somehow. They have four hearts, have been around for hundreds of millions of years and can feed their skin. Although it may not be nice, the modest Hagfish deserves a little love and respect.

Nicolas Appert – the inventor of hermetically sealed food preservation and the "father of the canning industry" – was born around this time around 1750 and today celebrates everything that comes in glasses. So, you know, put a lid on it.
